Environmental Justice
CSJ was an active lobbyer along with several other coalitions that helped push an environmental justice bill that is currently in conference committee and is projected to be a part of a larger environmental package including other legislation. CSJ held several events/presentations on Environmental Justice, showing grassroots support for the effort. One of the great things that came out of this campaign is the working relationship that was formed between the coalitions and the Environmental Protection Agency which will be useful down the road with other environmental campaigns. The goal of the Environmental Justice Bill is to protect the people most likely to live next to a contaminating power plant or close to a noisy highway. The communities close to these sources of waste and fumes are often people of color, low-paid and low-income people, and those residents who do not speak English well or at all. Our work on the bill is intended to repair the racism of environmental injustice in our cities.
