Thank you to our partners who are keeping the focus on making public transportation accessible in the Southcoast!
In the southeastern part of the state, a range of stakeholders from Brockton to the SouthCoast gathered virtually in December 2021 to discuss regional transportation challenges. This roundtable discussion was hosted by the RTA Advocates Coalition in collaboration with Community Economic Development Center, Coalition for Social Justice, United Neighbors of Fall River, Bristol Elder Services and the Greater Southeastern Massachusetts Labor Council.
Here’s what we heard.
RTAs run on limited daytime and weekend hours; offer insufficient connections to neighboring cities and towns; and provide too few routes and not enough frequency.
These barriers make it challenging for residents to get to work, shop for healthy and affordable food, access medical appointments and get to ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages), HiSET (High School Equivalency Assessment) and college classes. These everyday problems disproportionately harm BIPOC communities, low-income individuals, older adults, and people with disabilities.
